709 Signal Troop was raised in late April 1965 by 2 Signal Regiment for Deployment to South Vietnam. The troop was made up with a heavy radio detachment, a medium radio detachment and a communication centre detachment and was deployed to South Vietnam to support Headquarters Australian Army Force Vietnam (HQ AAFV) by providing a rear link to Australia and a forward link to the 1RAR Group. By late May 1965 first members of the troop started arriving in Saigon. 709 Signal Troop was reinforced by another troop from 2 Signal Regiment, 527 Signal Troop mid Sept 1965. Both troop's were incorporated into 145 Signal Squadron in April 1966.
